Diversity

Interesting finding of why diversity in a group helps... "That collective intelligence, the researchers believe, stems from how well the group works together. For instance, groups whose members had higher levels of "social sensitivity" were more collectively intelligent. "Social sensitivity has to do with how well group members perceive each other's emotions," says Christopher Chabris, a co-author and assistant professor of psychology at Union College in New York. "Also, in groups where one person dominated, the group was less collectively intelligent than in groups where the conversational turns were more evenly distributed," adds Woolley. And teams containing more women demonstrated greater social sensitivity and in turn greater collective intelligence compared to teams containing fewer women." http://www.physorg.com/news205076011.html

Farmville

From a nice essay on why farmville is less social but more a sociopathic game!! Some snippets from the post for the newbie.. or the avid player... What it is.... ?? "Farmville is a free, browser-based video game that is played through one’s Facebook account. Users harvest crops, decorate their farms, and interact with one another, in what is ostensibly a game about farming." How many play these... " over seventy-three million people play Farmville .[7] Twenty-six million people play Farmville every day. " And how do you advance is such a game.... Users advance through the game by harvesting crops at scheduled intervals; if you plant a field of pumpkins at noon, for example, you must return to harvest at eight o’clock that evening or risk losing the crop. Each pumpkin costs thirty coins and occupies one square of your farm, so if you own a fourteen by fourteen farm a field of pumpkins costs nearly six thou...

Public Vs Private

From a great speech by an ethnographer at http://sxsw.com/ In our quest to create a social profile ( linkedin/facebook/twitter) the battle of public and private on the web takes a whole new dimension... Its a struggle online to mantain the balance PII and PEI ... " If you've spent any time thinking about privacy, you've probably heard of PII - "Personally Identifiable Information." All too often, we assume that when people make PII available publicly that they don't care about privacy. While some folks are deeply concerned about PII, PII isn't the whole privacy story. What many people are concerned about is PEI - "Personally Embarrassing Information." And why do we want to be more social... "When people make information available, they make themselves vulnerable. We do this all the time in social settings. We make ourselves vulnerable because we believe that we might have something to gain from it. This is how we build friendships. We also...
